Help! My Furnace Won’t Stop Running in Madison, MS!
If you have a standard efficiency furnace, its heating cycles should last approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Systems running longer cycles indicate an issue that needs attention and may raise your heating costs. Consider these possible causes why your furnace in Madison, MS, runs constantly:
Restricted Airflow
Furnaces depend on adequate air movement to heat your home, especially to move heated air throughout your space. Airflow restrictions prevent this circulation and can inhibit air from entering your furnace.
The most common issues are a clogged air filter, closed or blocked vents, and a dirty heat exchanger or circulating fan. Keep your vents clear and plan to replace your filter every two to three months. A service technician will clean your furnace as part of a yearly routine maintenance visit.
Improper Fan Setting
There are two fan settings on your thermostat: “Auto” and “On.” In the “On” mode, the circulating fan runs constantly, regardless of whether it’s running a heating cycle. Keep it in “Auto” mode to ensure the fan only runs during heating cycles.
Blower Fan Issues
If the blower motor isn’t running properly, it won’t cycle the proper air volume and cause longer heating cycles. The most common issues are worn ball bearings and a dirty fan wheel. A service technician cleans the fan wheel during maintenance and lubricates bearings if needed.
Temperature Is Too High
While home heating is a matter of comfort, it’s possible to set the temperature so high that the furnace constantly runs. The difference between the temperature outside compared to your thermostat setting determines what’s too high. The greater the difference between the set temperature and the air outside, the longer your furnace will run.
Don’t let a constantly running furnace wear out your system or disturb your comfort. Call to schedule a furnace repair appointment with one of our NATE-certified service technicians at Springfield Heating and Air.
